First book talk:

Family Huddle by: Peyton Manning , Eli Manning , Archie Manning

Pile into the car with Eli, Peyton and their older brother, Cooper in Family Huddle for a trip to visit their grandparents. Their dad, former NFL star Archie Manning, is at the wheel with Olivia at his side. Eli, Peyton and Cooper joke around and play football at every opportunity. The boys run fun plays like the buttonhook, quarterback sneak, and hook and ladder. Family and football will always be a big deal in the Manning family.

Family Huddle is based on some of the Mannings’ memories from their days in Louisiana and Mississippi.

This past week we read about Johnny Appleseed. We know he is a American legend. Johnny Appleseed was born in  September 26,1774. As a young man, Johnny began traveling west, planting apple seeds in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and northern Indiana. He continued planting his apple seeds, helping early pioneers who had no room to take seedling apple trees with them on their journey to settle the western part of our country.

Greater Than, Less Than, Equal To

Posted by: | September 21, 2009 | 1 Comment |

Ordering Numbers
means to arrange them from least to greatest or
from greatest to least.

You can also use these symbols
> (greater than) < (less than) = (equal to)

between numbers to show order from
least
to greatest or
greatest to least.

If comparing two 3-digit numbers, put them in order by the first digit

–the digit in the hundred’s place.

439        625

Since 4 < 6

Then… 439 < 625

Sometimes the first digit is the same.

435         425

When this happens, look at the next digit (the ten’s place).

435         425

Since 3 > 2

Then… 435 > 425

But, what if the first two digits are the same?

439         438

Look at the digit in the one’s place.

Since 9 > 8

Then… 439 > 438

Let’s look at putting 3 numbers in order.

469, 649, and 964 are in order from the least to the greatest.

469 < 649 < 964

964, 649 and 469 are in order from greatest to least.

964 > 649 > 469

Here are a few games to help practice with:

Memorial Day

Posted by: | May 22, 2009 | No Comment |

Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868. It was for Americans to commemorate those fallen in the American Civil War. It was then changed to include American casualties of any war or military branch after World World 1. Congress passed Memorial as a national holiday in 1971 which was originally called Decoration Day. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May each year. So this weekend as we enjoy our day off from school and enjoy Augusta Days let remember the reason for Memorial Day and pause to be thankful for the freedoms we have due to the fallen soliders and those who are still fighting or who have fought in another war!

Here are a few websites on Memorial Day:

1. Scholastic News

2. History Channel Activities

3. Different activities on the holiday

Bye Bye Pluto

Posted by: | April 20, 2009 | 1 Comment |

I found this article and thought you guys would think it was cool!!! Enjoy

http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3749772

“Pluto—the heavenly body formerly known as a planet—has been given a new name. Stripped of its planet status two years ago, Pluto will be called a plutoid, astronomers have decided. The classification will apply to other objects that are similar to Pluto too.

Plutoid means “Pluto-like.” A plutoid is defined as a type of dwarf planet that orbits the sun at a distance greater than Neptune. The object must also have enough mass for its own gravi-tational strength to give it a spherical (ball-like) shape.

In addition to Pluto, the IAU named fellow dwarf planet, Eris, a plutoid. Eris is 27 percent larger than Pluto and lies beyond the eighth planet in our solar system, Neptune.

Astronomers said the new classification was necessary as scientists continue to discover many new objects in outer space.”
